The annual Beau and Belles Pageant is heading towards another successful year. The bachelor, Kip Masters, will be selecting his final three girls for the finale to be televised on Sunday night at the Old Bailey Mansion. It will be the crowning jewel of the venerable director, Everett Shelton, who is retiring after the event. When one of the young contestants is murdered just before air time, homicide detective Michael Gallagher heads up the investigation. What he finds are several suspects with a motive for revenge behind the crime. “The Vengeance,” is filled with plot twists played out by vivid characters that will keep the reader guessing until its shocking ending.

The positives: Dialog is really well handled by the author -- almost on the level of Elmore Leonard. Easy reading and keeps your interest. Character development is good. On the down side (see below) it takes almost half the book to do it.The negatives: Plot development is really slow. It's 40% into the book before the crime to be solved happens. The plot seems to slog along after that. Lots of stuff happening but the development doesn't seem quite right. Would have been better if the author integrated the plot and character development more in the beginning and reordered some of the elements of the plot to lead more naturally to a solution to the mystery.
That said, an enjoyable read. I'd read another in the series.

It has been a long time since I've read a book with so many twists and turns. It's not very often I don't figure out who the murderer is in the first few pages. I'm going to read the rest of the series. I have a feeling I won't be disappointed.
We've all seen or heard about "The Bachelor" on TV (and most of us groaned about it, I'm sure). This book is set at a college's version of this show, called the Beau and Belles, sponsored by a local businessman for 20-odd years. Set in Georgia, it's a plausible premise. The opening of the book tells us that someone is murdered, and then it goes through fairly detailed introductions to all of the primary characters, including the Beau, the Belles, various staffers, and the homicide detectives. It's a good first third of the book, giving us insight into each character which all of the others lack. Of course, then a murder occurs, but it's not the one we expect. Mr. Hurley spins a good yarn, twisting the suspicions around such that it's very difficult to guess "whodunit". I certainly didn't expect the ending.
This is the second book I've read by this author, and this one is far better formatted, with most of his previous editing problems solved. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.
This is definitely worth five stars. Every time I had to put it down so I could get back to work I couldn't wait to get back to it! The twists and turns will keep you guessing until the very end!
I found myself reaching for my at every free moment so I could see what happened next. Great characters and wonderful twists.
The story line was too simplistic. The writer showed little knowledge of police procedures. Things were too contrived. Personal emotions shallow.
This is the 2nd book that I've read in the Michael Gallagher Mystery Series and I am hooked! The characters are so well developed that they are as familiar as family. The plots are detailed, very well written, and filled with unexpected twists and turns. Patrick Hurley is a great mystery writer! Can't wait to start another!
